California had been a state of right for about a year before Yosemite was discovered. These days the park is not so remote, but still home to some of the most stunning scenery found in the world. The first place you need is to stop at Yosemite Village. Destin has been a longtime favorite of fishermen, in fact it started as a humble fishing village and today is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” they also claim to have the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in Florida docked in Destin Harbor, which is great because we love fresh caught seafood.

Off shore fishing is excellent with close access to Gulf of Mexico via the 100 Fathom Curve which is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get to the deeper waters in the Gulf where the best fish are. You can charter a boat and go after a big Blue Marlin, this is the best place in Florida to catch them, Dolphin (mahi-mahi), Wahoo and Sailfish are also caught during late spring and summer.

If you like to fish in shore you can catch Cobia and Kingfish; bottom fishing is also good, grouper and snapper are commonly caught. You dont even necessarily need a charter a big boat to fish in shore or bottom either, fish can be caught from small boats and even kayaks launched from the beach. Choctawhatchee Bay is another great place to fish in the area; trout, redfish and black drum are commonly caught in the Bay. Even if you dont like to fish the bay is beautiful and a great place to spend the day on the water but be sure to bring your sunscreen the last thing youll want to take home is a nasty sunburn.

The East Pass, which is also called Destin Pass, has the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. The west side of Destin Pass is accessible to the public; they have a great beach there which is beautiful and remote if you want to get away from the crowd.

Destin is a popular vacation spot and a big resort town with beautiful hotels and resorts that the whole family will enjoy. They have also have places you can rent by the week, which is what we did, with many places right on the ocean. About 4.5 million people visit the area every year and we were happy to be two of them. They have family amusement parks with go-carts, miniature golf, thrill rides, and even bungee jumping. We also saw at least a dozen well manicured golf courses and just as many tennis courts.

If you like to shop they have these great little outdoor malls that are cleverly disguised as quaint wood framed buildings that hold all the latest designer brands and labels; it reminded me of being in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

One of the things we liked best about Destin was the food. The dining in Destin is as diverse as it is delicious; restaurants here range from jacket and tie fine dining overlooking the Bay to flip-flops and cut offs oyster bars overlooking the Gulf. Most, we were delight to find, have live entertainment; everything from classical pianos playing to local bands to jukeboxes. Seafood is the natural choice, because it’s not uncommon to see restaurant marquees inviting you to come in and enjoy the fresh catch from the night before, but they have a little bit of everything including Caribbean style.

So next time youre in the Panhandle be sure to get over to Destin, its a great little seaside town where you can fish, surf, parasail, golf or shop. You can spend the day on the beach then spend the night out having some family fun and most of all enjoy the seafood.

When in Central Virginia visit these three major battlefields, where many men shed their blood and no winner was declared.  Make sure you go on a US National Park Ranger led tour.  You will be moved emotionally by the experience.

Just some loose information about these places, without getting too boring.  Chancellorsville  is named after an inn run by the Chancellors, which stood at a five cornered intersection, a major crossroads.  The battle turned out to be one of Lee’s greatest victories.  Stonewall Jackson  marched his troops through the day for twelve miles and attacked Hooker” forces on the flank at the dinner hour, causing great casualties.  While out for reconnaissance at night with his staff, they were thought to be the enemy and were fired upon.  He was shot and died a few days later from pneumonia (See the movie Gods and Generals for the complete story).

Today we decided to hike the one-mile plus Hazel Grove Trail, which is part of the Chancellorsville Battlefield.  Ordinarily this would be an easy hike, but today’s forecast was sunny with a high in the mid 90s.  The CSA set up their artillery on a hill called Hazel Grove.  The USA ‘s position was about ½ mile across an open field near a house named Fairfield (part of the Chancellor estate).  Woods flanked either side. The battle took place after Jackson was injured.  The hike along the trail gave us an appreciation of the terrain on which the battle was raged.  We traversed two hills at least thirty feet in height and crossed a couple of creeks.  The CSA forces attacked from the woods and inflicted heavy casualties on the Union forces.  Fairfield house, home of the slave overseer, was spared severe damage and was used as a hospital for the Union.  A cannon ball landed in the fireplace, but did not explode.  The men were cooking outside.  One officer commented that it would have spoiled their breakfast, if it had gone off.  Ironically, the house burned down three weeks after the battle was over.

From here Lee went to fight at Gettysburg, which he lost.  One year later, Lee was in the same area, less than ten miles from Chancellorsville in an area called Wilderness Run.  This time he had a new opponent, Grant.  The battle ran for two day, May 5 & 6, 1864 and ended in a stalemate.  Unlike previous encounters, where the Union forces retreated after a battle to regroup for another day, Grant decided to move forward al all costs.  He had more men than Lee and could get replacements.  His goal was to destroy The Army of Northern Virginia like a pit bull.

Grant then headed South for the race to Richmond.  He stopped near Spotsylvania Courthouse.  Lee’s forces arrive ten minutes before Grant’s and assumed the high ground.  Using their hands and any other type of makeshift digging tools available, the CSA troops built miles of trenches in the Virginia clay.  Grant probed the lines with skirmishes and found a weakness when Upton’s men broke through the lines at a Salient, a defensive position.  A few days later Grant threw over 20,000 men at another weak spot.  The men’s orders were to march without firing a shot, keep going no matter whom got killed or injured, until the lines were breached.  Instead of fighting in a line a hitting like a slap in the face, the troops lined up and acted more like a fist.  The impact was overwhelming and the hand to hand fighting lasted for twenty hours.  Three days later the armies left, leaving 30,000 casualties, miles of trenches (still present) and Lee on the perpetual defensive.
